A Celebration of Life
For Joseph Thurmon Turner, Jr.

Joseph Thurmon Turner was called to rest on June 9th 2008. Joe (also known as Joejoe to family and friends) was born on August 23, 1931, the second eldest of six children born to Joseph Thurmon, Sr. and Pauline Mathews Turner in Washington D.C. At a young age he enlisted in the United States National Guard and later the U.S. Armed Forces. For over 20 years Joe demonstrated loyalty and commitment to his country; he had traveled extensively around the world in addition to serving with multiple honors and medals in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was especially proud of being a Tank Commander, and retiring as a Sergeant First Class.

Shortly following his retirement from the U.S. Army in 1971, Joseph moved from Washington D.C. to Honolulu where he met and married his soul mate of more than 33 years, Leuga Alaimoana. They were blessed to have three wonderful children: Fetuao, Maota and Alii in addition to his children from a previous union: Patricia, Joseph III and Anthony (Joseph III and Anthony are now decreased).

Joseph was a devoted family man and his home was always filled with love, fun and laughter. He taught his children the importance of being a strong cohesive unit in addition to offering life lessons and advice that only a man with many extraordinary life experiences can. He invested much time with the children of both his family and the extended family and he took joy in sharing colorful and humorous stories of his past, especially those from his years in the military.

He was known for his delicious bread pudding, tapioca, homemade cookies and for the most tender and tasty steaks. He also was known for his extensive DVD collection which totals approximately 600, and for his love of candy and wine tasting. His favorite hobbies included fishing, shopping and reading. He was also known for increasing purified water marketing in American Samoa and was often seen lovingly cleaning and maintaining his water machines. Joe took pride in himself and in all that he did. The only thing that he hated was waking up at 5:30 every morning by his wife’s singing “When I am Calling youuuuu, you better come to meeee”.

Joseph often compared his colorful life experiences to the beauty of a “rainbow”. Today we celebrate his life and appreciate all the wonderful memories he has left us. We appreciate your caring, sharing and celebrating Joe with us.
